Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury School Sport Network alongside Cheltenham Borough Council ran an event on Wednesday May 23rd to coincide with the Olympic Torch Travelling to Cheltenham.

The Celebration event saw students from Primary and Secondary Schools participate in various sporting competitions; this was supported by volunteers from The University of Gloucestershire and Leisure@. The Competitions which made up the day were:

Primary School Archery- Lead by Deer Park Archers, 3 Primary Schools (Leckhampton, Gardner’s Lane and Rowanfield Juniors) all received an hour of coaching, learning new skills and techniques of this Olympic Sport. This was finished with an inter-school competition with the winners from each school receiving Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at the presentation ceremony. All students were in Year 5 and 6.

Girls Touch Rugby- Lead by Ken Stone- Rugby League. 4 teams from 3 Secondary Schools; All Saints’, Cleeve and Pittville (x2) played in a round robin tournament on the main Pitch at The Prince of Wales. They had all received coaching from experienced Rugby Coaches Ken Cuthbert and Ken Stone in the run up to the event. The Year 7&8 competition was the Level 2 qualifying event for the Gloucestershire School Games on June 16th, and the final saw Pittville and All Saints’ battling it out. Pittville were victorious and will be the District representatives at Hartpury on Saturday 16th June.

Team Triathlon- Teams of 4 (2 boys and 2 girls) took on the challenge, new to many, of the Team Triathlon- every member of the team had to complete ALL disciplines, times were recorded and the team that completed all events in the quickest time would win the Gold Medal’s. They were: 200m swim in the pool at Leisure@, a 4000m bike ride on exercise bikes (due to the glorious sunshine, were placed outside!) and a 2012m run around Prince of Wales Athletics Track.

There were some fantastic performaces from all teams, especially the run at the end under the baking sun! University of Gloucester Volunteer’s did a fantastic job as time keepers, event leaders and team managers- encouraging and supporting the young people from local schools who were aged 14years+. The medal ceremony saw all teams receive participation certificate and Pates-Bronze, Cleeve-Silver and Tewkesbury-Gold . There was an extra prize for our Olympic and Paralympic Quiz Winners- Pate Grammar. Well Done to all that took part.

Feedback was very positive about the day, many participants wanting to find out about their sport and clubs in the local area. It was great to see a variety of age groups coming together to participate in new competitions in order to celebrate an exciting time for Schools and Sport. We hope to run a similar event next year! Thank you to Cheltenham Borough Council, Loand Cheltenham & North Tewkesbury School Sport Network.
