Records tumble in the pool

The annual secondary schools swimming championships, held at Cheltenham Ladies College, provided the forum for a plethora of record-breaking performances.  In the sixty event programme an amazing fifteen records were broken.  With Balcarras’ Sixth Former Warren Cannon leading the way with a clean sweep of records in all four strokes.  His recording breaking feat was closely followed by the Tewkesbury’s Year 9 Girls team with Hattie Rothwell setting two new marks in the Backstroke and Frontcrawl events, and teammate Becky Sheppard breaking the breaststroke and Butterfly records.  The Tewkesbury Year 9 team continued their record-breaking form in their final event, the freestyle relay, dipping under the minute to claim the honours.

Cheltenham Ladies College’s Year 8 swimmer, Sophie Tebbs swam the fastest freestyle girls time of the afternoon to set a new age group best, as well as recording a new record in the Year 8 Butterfly.  Also in the Year 8 age group Pate’s backstroke specialist Sophie Whitehead was on form to set the new best time.

Pate’s Year 7 girls team displayed their strength in both the medley and freestyle relays to set the new top times.  Whilst Cleeve’s School sixth form boys team gave an impressive record-breaking performance in the freestyle relay, and came hundreds of a second away breaking the 50 second barrier.

Overall the afternoon saw over 200 swimmers representing nine of the district schools all contributing to some very exciting races.
